Best Time to Swim in Croatia: A Month-by-Month Sea Temperature Guide
When is the Sea Warmest?
The Adriatic Sea along the Croatian coast is at its warmest from mid-June through mid-September, peaking in July and August when temperatures regularly exceed 25°C in most coastal cities.
Month-by-Month Breakdown
May (17–19°C): The sea is warming up but still fresh for most swimmers. Brave locals start their season early, enjoying uncrowded beaches and crystal-clear water.
June (20–23°C): Swimming season officially begins. Water temperatures are comfortable, and the beaches haven't yet reached peak crowd levels.
July (23–26°C): Peak season. Perfect conditions for swimming, snorkelling, and all water sports. Islands like Hvar and Vis tend to have the warmest waters.
August (24–27°C): The warmest month. Sheltered bays can reach 28°C or higher. Ideal for families with young children who prefer bathwater-warm seas.
September (21–24°C): The underrated gem. The sea retains its summer warmth while the crowds thin dramatically. Many locals consider September the best swimming month.
October (18–21°C): The sea cools gradually but remains swimmable, especially in southern Dalmatia around Dubrovnik and the islands.
